Combatting the hate towns of Poland

It takes courage to demonstrate in favour of gay rights when faced with hostile bigots.

There’s a lot of anti-gay activity in Poland right now.

My town has twinned with towns in France, Germany and … a town called Rabka in Poland.

So I wondered whether Rabka was a hate town?

I found out it’s located in a county/region that has declared itself to be a ‘gay-free zone’.

Hmm.

So I asked my town council (and the other towns that are twinned with Rabka) to see whether the twin had a policy on sexual orientation.

After a bit of urging, the word came back that Rabka didn’t have an anti-gay policy.

That’s not quite the same as being opposed to anti-gay sentiment.

And I’ve said that.

But it’s probably as far as I can take it. The council has a lot of other things to do.

And yet, I fell to thinking.

100 towns and counties in Poland have created an anti-gay policy.

What if we got their win towns to disassociate from them?

Maybe the bigots wouldn’t care. But it would be moral support for gay people in those towns and in general.

So I’m compiling a list of places that are twinned with hate towns. And I’ll write to them, asking them to stop their twinning.

It will send a message, albeit a small one.

Remember the adage: ‘They came for the jews and I did nothing. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did nothing…’ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_…

If you don’t speak out, you’re actively supporting the bigots and hate mongers. Time to make a stand.

Post script: The Nazis established a murderous training school in Rabka where the SS were taught how to torture and execute jews. You would think the sickening events that took place there would encourage the townspeople to be empathetic. The 2019 gay rights demonstration attracted 30 supporters and twice that number of opponents shouting ‘down with faggotry’.
